Tour de France Femmes
My first grand tour race!
It was the third edition of the Tour de France Femmes avec Swift. While technically the UCI does not consider it a Grand Tour race, it is one of the biggest races in elite women’s road cycling. The Grand Depart took place in Rotterdam, only a relatively short train ride away, with 3 of the 8 stages taking place in Rotterdam or nearby cities.
I’m still forging my path as a professional photographer. At this point I do not have press credentials, a challenge for road racing photography. Reviewing the 3 stages in the Netherlands, I decided to focus on racing photos for Stage 1 as there was a spot where the peloton passed three times. This means I only had three (very quick) opportunities for photos.
The ongoing heat wave made the journey and day more arduous. I left the train station on foot to find my chosen spot, the exact location being a bit of mystery. I found out later in the day that the newly constructed tunnel near my chosen location was not technically open to the public yet and was, therefore, not appearing on public maps. I also learned that the gathered spectators at this spot were involved in the project preparing the tunnel for Stage 1. As it goes, I was a bit of an outsider, and I’m sure I confused a few people!
My honest feelings are that it was a hard day, and I felt demoralized at the end of it. A lot of effort for only a few photos. Because the course was a highway, the creativity was limited. I did get to use my mirror though.
Stage 3 was a whole different (great) story!
The following day, the centre of Rotterdam was buzzing with riders, support staff, photographers and fans excited for Stage 3 - an individual time trial. The temperature was hot but not quite as scorching as the day before. Near the end of the stage the wind picked up and a few stormy clouds rolled in bringing in a cool breeze.
I loved the vibes, the scenery, and the cyclists. Please enjoy a selection of my favorite photos from the day starting with preparation and recon to the racing.
What a day! Can’t wait to photograph another grand tour stage.
