Wielrenblad

There was a loud thud at my front door. I peaked down the hall and saw what looked like a book in a clear slip sitting on the floor. My excitement grew when I saw that it was the latest issue of Wielrenblad. A few months prior I was hired to photograph Shimano’s Super Cycling Sunday, organized by the incredible Sebastian Sutherland. It was an honor to be part of the event, and it was even cooler to finally see my images in print.

Wielrenblad is a dutch cycling magazine made with an abundance of passion. This particular issue is a special one, bringing together Wielrenblad and the mountain bike magazine Up / Down.

Super Cycling Sunday took place on chilly and windy day, typical for a Dutch spring day, but I thanked the weather gods when the sun shone bright all day. I knew when I took this photo, on a path I’ve ridden so many times, that it was a real gem. I’m not surprised it became the cover spread of this article. Enjoy the original image below.

What is special about the windmill photo is that I shot it WHILE riding my bike. For the entire group ride, I rode with my photography backpack containing my primary camera and my secondary camera around my neck. This was no leisure ride for me, keeping up with the group with half my mind thinking about potential shots.

I’m super happy with the series of photos they selected. Thus far I have curated my own series, so it’s interesting to see how someone else creates a story with my photos.

Not that long ago I took a leap of faith with pursuing photography and more specifically, cycling photography. Being hired as a photographer and having my photos published in a cycling magazine is an actual dream. Many many thanks to Wielrenblad, Shimano, and the amazing Sebastian Sutherland for inviting me to be part of this special event.
